What to Expect on the Climb

  1. Gear Up & Training Meet your guide at the Thaba Adventures Centre (Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge). Receive your gear and complete a thorough safety briefing.
  2. The Approach Hike is a 3 km uphill hike from Sentinel Peak Car Park to the base of the Via Ferrata.
  3. The Climb – Three Pitches Tackle three exhilarating sections of the Via Ferrata, each offering new challenges and stunning views.
  4. The Bailout Point If you feel unsure after the first pitch, there’s an option to exit the route—though most people surprise themselves with how far they can go.
  5. Summit at Beacon Buttress (3,124m) Celebrate  and enjoy panoramic views of the Drakensberg.
  6. Short Hike to Tugela Falls A brief walk leads you to Tugela Falls—the highest multi-drop waterfall in the world. Trust us, it’s worth every step.
  7. The Descent: Choose between the Beacon Buttress Gully or the famous Chain Ladders Route back to the contour path.

Fitness & Altitude: What You Need to Know

You’ll start at the Sentinel Car Park at an altitude of 2,500m and ascend to over 3,200m at the summit.

  • Fitness Tip: Good cardiovascular fitness and a willingness to persevere are essential.
  • Altitude Consideration: The higher you go, the harder your body works—even at a steady pace.
  • Safety First: If at any point you feel you can’t continue, there’s an exit option.

It’s okay if you’re not 100% sure before you start. Most people find that excitement, support, and determination carry them through.

  • Fitness Level: You need to be reasonably fit. This climb requires endurance, strength, and determination.
