Guided Dragon’s Tale Via Ferrata in the Drakensberg
The Dragon’s Tale is the Drakensberg Via Ferrata, a guided fixed-cable climbing route on Beacon Buttress in the Northern Drakensberg. It combines an uphill mountain hike with three sections of fixed-cable climbing, followed by a visit to Tugela Falls and a descent via the Chain Ladders or Beacon Buttress Gully.
No technical climbing experience is required, but this is a demanding high-altitude day. You need reasonable fitness, a head for heights and the ability to spend six to eight hours moving through steep, exposed mountain terrain.

How the Drakensberg Via Ferrata day works
1. Meet your guide and prepare
Meet your Thaba Adventures guide at the Adventure Centre at Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge. You will be issued with your helmet, harness and Via Ferrata lanyard before completing a safety briefing and practice session.
2. Travel to Sentinel Peak Car Park
The Via Ferrata is approached from Sentinel Peak Car Park. Guests without a suitable 4×4 can use the scheduled Witsieshoek shuttle.
3. Hike to the base of the route
The approach is an uphill mountain hike of approximately 3km from Sentinel Peak Car Park to the base of the Dragon’s Tale.
4. Climb the three pitches
The route consists of three climbing pitches equipped with fixed steel cable and steps. You remain clipped to the safety cable while moving along the route.
A bailout point after the first pitch allows your guide to take you off the route if you decide not to continue.
5. Reach Beacon Buttress
The Via Ferrata finishes on Beacon Buttress at approximately 3,124 metres. From here, the route continues across the escarpment towards Tugela Falls.
6. Visit Tugela Falls
Weather and time permitting, the experience includes a walk to the top of Tugela Falls before beginning the descent.
7. Descend from the escarpment
Your guide will select the most appropriate descent according to the group and mountain conditions. The usual options are the Chain Ladders or Beacon Buttress Gully.
Is the Dragon’s Tale suitable for you?
You do not need technical climbing experience. You do need:
- sufficient fitness for a full mountain day;
- confidence on steep and exposed terrain;
- sturdy hiking boots with good grip;
- the ability to follow your guide’s safety instructions;
- a body weight within the certified equipment range of 40kg to 120kg.
This is not a gentle introductory walk. The altitude, approach hike, exposure and changeable Drakensberg weather all contribute to the challenge.
Safety and mountain conditions
The Dragon’s Tale is a high-altitude mountain experience. Weather can change quickly, even when conditions at Witsieshoek appear clear.
Your guide will assess the route, weather and group on the day. Thaba Adventures may postpone, shorten or cancel the climb when conditions make it unsafe to continue.
All participants receive specialist equipment, fitting assistance, practical training and a safety briefing before leaving for the route.
What to bring
Bring:
- sturdy hiking boots;
- warm layers;
- a waterproof jacket;
- a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses;
- lunch and energy snacks;
- sufficient drinking water;
- any personal medication you may need.
Avoid loose clothing or accessories that could catch on the equipment.
